Identification of microfilariae encountered in West Africa.

چکیده
THE standard morphological descriptions of microfilarire tend to gloss over several very real difficulties in identification. Satisfactory staining of the dead organism sometimes seems impossible, measurement of distances along the organism (see, e.g., Belding, 1952) is often impractic'able because of its irregular disposition, and the tip of the tail, recognised as the site of certain distinctive features, is frequently hidden under another part of the organism.' In addition, sheaths are not always stained sufficiently to be recognisable, and the characteristic rhythmicity of certain species is not absolute, so that microfilarire may be found "out of hours," particularly in heavy infections. Supra-vital staining with methylene blue, which brings out certain other characteristics, has not been found adequate for final identification in many cases. These notes are based on work done in evolving satisfactory methods of species identification, and it is hoped that they may be useful especially to those unaccustomed to these organisms. The microfilarire concerned are those of Wuchereria bancrofti, Loa loa and Acanthocheilonema perstans in the blood, and Onchocerca volvulus and A. streptocerca in the skin.

Influence of environmental factors on the sap flux density of mango trees under rain-fed cropping systems in West Africa
Xylem sap flux density (Fd) was measured, on a 43-year-old (mature) and three 4-year-old (young) mango (Mangifera indica L.) trees, using Granier-type probes. The relative influences of environmental variables were examined under well-watered condition. Circumferential variation in Fd was also investigated by placing sensors on the north, south-west and south-east sides of the mature tree. Sap ...
متن کاملMolecular survey of Canine Microfilariae Species in East-Azerbaijan province of Iran
Filariasis in dogs is caused by several species of filariids. Because of importance of this infection in veterinary medicine and public health, it is necessary to carry out an epidemiological and cross sectional studies in various geographical areas and use of well-adapted diagnosis methods. In this study 205 capillary and whole blood samples were collected from doges in various counties of Eas...
متن کاملMolecular evidence for host specificity of parasitic nematode microfilariae in some African rainforest birds.
Here we describe, determine the prevalence, and examine the host-specificity of some parasitic nematode microfilariae in selected bird species from West and Central Africa. We used microscopy to determine the prevalence of microfilariae in 969 host individuals representing 121 rainforest bird species from Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea. Thirteen (11%) of these potential host spec...
متن کاملInfluence of atmospheric circulation patterns on dust transport during Harmattan Period in West Africa
This study has used TOMS AI as well as the reanalysis dataset of thirty-four years (1979-2012) to investigate the influence of atmospheric circulation on dust transport during the Harmattan period in West Africa, using Aerosol Index (AI) data, obtained from various satellite sensors. Changes in Inter-Tropical Discontinuity (ITD), Sea Surface Temperature (SST) over the Gulf of Guinea, and North ...
متن کاملA Thematic Analysis of the National Anthems of English West Africa
This paper investigates major themes espoused in the national anthems of English West Africa. Further, it seeks to find out how these themes are projected linguistically and literarily. Five English-speaking countries in West Africa, namely, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia, were purposively sampled based on their colonial history, language and geographical location for this...
